A Message from Mark... On Dreaming Big

Two weeks ago, WFYC hosted our inaugural Promise Awards Celebration. This program was designed to raise awareness about the importance of youth development organizations and professionals, highlight best practices in youth development around the globe, and share stories of the creativity, courage, and resiliency of youth. Our seven award recipients are incredible demonstrations of resiliency and determination.

If you listen to their stories, you will notice that every award recipient is driven by a desire to improve themselves. But you will also notice an even bigger desire to improve their families and communities. They embody what Elizabeth Nyamayaro, special advisor to the UN World Food Programme and the Promise Awards Celebration’s keynote speaker, spoke about when she said:

“Dare to dream a dream for others… We are often taught that a dream should be a dream for ourselves. For our own individual pursuit. But the truth is that a dream can be for one and it can also be for many.”

With 1.8 billion young people in the world today, we currently have the largest population of young people in history. In Elizabeth's remarks, and in the remarks of several other event speakers, we hear a common call to our youth. It is a call for change and for the creation of a more just, equal, and sustainable world. And it is our call, and the call of all our WFYC Affiliate Members, to help guide them in this endeavor. I want to thank all of you for the work you do to support young people. And for dreaming a dream for others. As Elizabeth mentioned in her speech, it is often the unsung heroes who change the world. Now more than ever, youth are counting on all of us to dream big.
